Zanya Laurence

She’s sweet, yet moving sound showcases her many soulful influences.

Zanya’s Updates Interview & Review

Introduce yourself and tell us where you are from?

I’m Zanya Laurence. I’m an R&B/Soul singer/songwriter, originally from San Diego, CA but went to high school in Albuquerque, NM. Now I live in Denver, CO.

zan2When did you start making music and realize that you wanted to be a singer?

I’ve always been involved in music since I was a kid. I was in choir, then band, singing in talent shows & events & then after high school, I was introduced to my first studio session.

I started off rapping because I wrote a lot and also because I was still a little timid vocally. I loved it though, & I started writing as many songs as I could & eventually I learned how to run a session & built my own studio.

I think I realized that I wanted to be a singer when my mom bought me my first Mariah Carey CD. I think I was around 8 maybe? I memorized all the words & practiced all her licks. She pretty much taught me how to sing.

Zanya Laurence – Unpredictable (Acapella)

How would you describe the music that you make? I know it’s hard to compare yourself to other artists and styles, but what kind of vibe is your music on?

I call it “Jazzy Neo-Soul”. Basically, R&B, adding different flavors, whether it’s Jazz, organic Soul, or Hip-Hop. My style has been compared to Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, & Lauryn Hill.

zan1Was there a person or artist that inspired you to start writing songs and hit the studio?

Lauryn Hill was a huge writing inspiration. Cee-Lo, when he was with Goodie Mob also inspired some good writing topics. Alicia Keys inspired me in a way that she helped me to find my niche.

I think I’ve pretty much narrowed down my style & who I am as an artist, but I am always inspired by new songs & talent.

What do you enjoy the most about the whole process of recording and writing music? Is there something that you absolutely love and is there anything that maybe you don’t like doing as much?

My favorite part of the writing & recording process is getting to hear the song come together through the speakers instead of just in my head. It’s always very exciting. As far as what I don’t like? Well, I am most creative when I am alone, so I don’t like being put on the spot. That is hardly ever the case though since I usually record my own sessions.

This Is My Life by Zanya Laurence @ MI

What do you consider your biggest achievement?

I think my biggest achievement is the simple fact that I do what I love to do, regardless. I also think my new album is pretty great & it took a lot of work to see it through, so I’m proud of that.

Wzan3hat projects have you released so far and what feedback from the media have you had?

Well, my debut, “Soul Theory” was released in late ’07 & I just released my sophomore album, “Always” last month. “Soul Theory” received great reviews; Fear of A Rap Planet, Music Morsels, Trakheadz.com, Whisperin” & Hollerin” etc. & I am working on getting some press for my new album this month!

Let’s talk about your latest project, its sounding really tight. Who dealt with the production and how long did it take to make?

Thank you! Well, the project as a whole is dedicated to my father who passed away a few years ago. After that I took a break for a while just recording a little here & there until I found my inspiration again. As I wrote more & more I started to develop a vision. I worked with a handful of music producers that provided me with the music I needed to make it happen, but over-all, I am the executive producer of the entire project, from writing the lyrics, vocal arrangement, recording the sessions & over-seeing the mixing, mastering, artwork & creative direction.

Parallel Universe by Zanya Laurence

Do you think that radio is still important now in the digital age?

Well, any kind of radio play is the ultimate promotion but, it’s hard to say. The industry has evolved incredibly over the last decade. I think Top 40 radio still pretty much works the same but now us independent artists have the opportunity to share our music though online radio stations, satellite & digital applications like Last FM, Pandora, etc. & people actually listen! So I think it’s pretty great, but I don’t think FM radio is going anywhere any time soon.

painoDo you think the internet helps or hinders independent artists?

I think the internet is the best thing that ever happened to the independent artist. And now in this digital age, you have to get acquainted with the online world or it is just impossible to keep up with the competition.

You want to do as much homework as possible & put your name out there & that’s really hard to do without the internet!

More Song (Called Back Onstage)

Let’s talk image and branding for a minute. Some artists spend lots of money on artwork and other acts aren’t that interested. How important is image, artwork and branding to you?

Branding is essential in any business. The customer wants to know and familiarize themselves with what they’re buying. Image is part of that. If I’m riding a horse through the country with a cowboy hat on the cover of my next CD, people are going to be confused. Artwork is important & you never want the fonts or design to look generic, but what’s on the CD is always the most important.

Zanya Laurence Sunday Music Video

Do you enjoy playing live? Have you done many gigs and what kind of artists have you supported or played alongside?

I do love performing live & have been doing it since I was a kid. I really came into my own though when I moved to Los Angeles & put together my own band. When I moved back to NM, I performed a lot with my younger brother Richard. He plays the guitar & sings, so we did a lot of shows together at local Hip Hop joints.

What was the last album you brought and apart from Soul/R&B what other genres of music do you listen to?

The last album I bought was Bitter:Sweet’s Remix Game. I listen to a lot of different genres, depending on the mood I’m in. I dig electronic music, House, Jazz, Flamenco, Alternative, Rock, Hip Hop… I’m pretty much open to whatever as long as it’s not Heavy Death Metal or Happy Hardcore House.

Have you got any videos on You Tube and have any ever got played on TV Stations?

I have not been on TV yet. I do have a YouTube channel with close to 20 videos posted. I am still trying to decide which song I want to release a music video for this new album, but I will definitely keep you posted!

Zanya Laurence Compilation

What plans have you got for the future?

The immediate future is filled with lots of promotion for my new album, and after the holidays I’d like to start working on my next project which I’d like to do all acoustic. Switch it up a bit. Who knows…?

Review

Zanya Laurence – Always

backreviewFollowing a gap of five years Zanya Laurence is back with a great neo soul album which has a touch of jazz flowing through it. 17 quality songs, emotional songs about real life delivered with passion and conviction.

My personal favourites include “Come To Mama” which has a jazzy edgy vibe, “Enjoy The Ride” where Zanya’s vocal range really shines through, “Control Freak” about a relationship that has gone wrong and” Constant Change” which has an India Irie Feel to it with the acoustic guitar.

However I struggle to find a weak song on this fine set. Discover this fine album and find your own favourites, this girl could go all the way.

The Endangered

The group are made up of Maiya Sykes, Nick Block, Frank Abraham and Gene Coye.

Founded in Los Angeles in 2009, guitarist Nick Block and drummer Gene Coye, who met while attending California Institute of the Arts, enlisted Berklee College of Music graduate, bassist Frank Abraham, to establish a start-up music production house dedicated to writing songs for others.

While working together the three realized that they were in need of a talented in-house vocalist and turned to singer Maiya Sykes to write lyrics and perform the trio’s compositions.

Sykes, a brilliant performer who not only sings back-up for Macy Gray and fronts the house band for the uber-trendy Sayers Club in Hollywood, was an undeniable first choice. Prior to teaming up as The Endangered, Sykes had previously played with both Coye and Abraham.

Mistakes live at Molly Malones 6.6.12 ( EP Release Party)

With a few songs under their belt, this foursome discovered that writing as a team came naturally and with a good vibe. According to guitarist Nick Block “We’d established a unique sound based on the eclectic mix of all our personal influences and realized it made more sense to depart from the concept of selling our recordings for other artists to cover, and embrace the idea of making a true band out of the relationship the four of us developed as writers. ” It was then that these collaborators decided to officially become The Endangered.

The Endangered – Message In A Bottle (The Police cover)

“We named the group The Endangered because we felt that the type of music we enjoyed playing was slowly being edged out of the popular music lexicon,” says Sykes.

She continues, “As musicians, we enjoy a wide variety of musical genres and we wanted the freedom to create music that celebrated what drew us to music in the first place. We hope to make music that is popular and thought-provoking.”

The Endangered has since been committed to composing, recording and performing original material that brings to life their unique blend of Vintage Soul, Adult Contemporary R&B, Rock, Hip-Hop and Jazz.

A sonic reflection of The Endangered’s unique, cross-genre artistry, the band’s live set list includes covers of Radiohead’sThere, There’ and The Police’sMessage In A Bottle’. The Endangered actively gigs all over Los Angeles and has performed at landmark venues like Molly Malones.

The Endangered – Calling On You (Official Music Video)

May 22, 2012 marked the release of the band’s first EP, The Endangered. Produced by Grammy(R)-winning, industry veteran, Steven Miller (Jack Johnson, Pink, Dave Matthews Band and more), The Endangered is comprised of five tracks including ‘Broke Heart’ – the first song written by this group, along with the band’s first single, an emotional ballad about overcoming heartbreak entitled ‘Calling On You’. ‘Calling On You’ is OUT NOW!!!!

Darryl Anders~AgapéSoul

Bassist, singer, songwriter and producer

Darryl Anders’ credits include gigs with Tower of Power, Narada Michael Walden, Zigaboo Modeliste, Booker T. Jones, Joyce Cooling, and two-time Grammy-nominee Ledisi, but millions of video game crazy kids have heard his bass, production, and vocal skills on Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band.

The moment you put on the gospel-tinged “Don’t Say U Love Me,” featuring guest vocalist Zoe Ellis, you’ll be transported back to a time when musicians played real instruments, songs had enduring melodies, and lyrics actually said something.

AgapeSoul “Believe In Love”

Anders’ husky baritone and Lars’ soulful sax work make “Time Cannot Erase” take its place high up on the list of modern baby-making music.Jones’ sultry vocals on the funky yet laid-back “Tell Me Where It Hurts” is just what the doctor ordered.

The Latin flavored “Voice of Reason” reminds us that love is indeed everlasting. If you like real music, you’ll love AgapéSoul. Besides being highly skilled purveyors of soulful originals, the band represents a movement, a new voice of music from the old school. Their goal is to bring something positive to listeners.

It is not about us, as people or as musicians. It’s about the songs,” says Anders. “I’ve been blessed with an opportunity to share my music with the world, and I hope AgapéSoul will inspire and encourage everyone who hears us.”

Reviews

Agape Soul – Believe in Love

agapesoul3-300This is a really solid debut album from this San Fran outfit; the set is a mix of tempos, full of soul and emotion and thankfully for these ears real instruments on the production. There is something here for soul music lovers of all styles.

The title track sets the tone, a joyful uplifting groove “Don’t stop believing“ which really lifts the spirit although I would prefer the rap cutting out to be honest, just does not work for me.“Say you will “is a great mid tempo dancer that should find favour with Modern Soul dance floors.

There is a sax lead instrumental cover of Stevie’s Sir Duke which I imagine the band can really go to town on when they perform live.“Tell me where it hurts “is another mid tempo winner soulful and with a catchy hook that stays with you.Vocalist Indra Jones hits the spot

There is another quality cover of Quincy Jones “If I ever lose this heaven” and time cannot erase has that quiet storm feel about it that should hit the spot for lovers of a smoother soul sound. All in all a really solid debut set.

Margot B.

Margot B. is very versatile…although concentrating on urban/pop now, she has a history and enjoys R&B, Neo Soul and Jazz…

From the pageant stage to the soundstage, to center stage with a Grammy-nominated artist, triple-threat Margot B. makes a habit of working hard and moving forward.

The Pittsburgh native began her career in front of the cameras at the age of nine, modeling for local and national talent agencies.

It’s been a steady, accomplished rise ever since. At 13, she wrote a tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called In My Dreams, which continues to be featured at MLK events nationwide.

While her friends planned ‘Sweet Sixteen’ parties, Margot was winning the National Miss Black Teen title and spending the year visiting Veterans Hospitals, performing at charity fundraisers, and volunteering for Make-A-Wish and Children’s Hospital.

EFFICACY: Margot B

2005 saw two major milestones: her first full-length CD Unframed was released to a sold-out crowd at the Hard Rock Cafe, and she was a main force behind Pittsburgh’s Katrina Relief Benefit Concert (both planning and performing) at Mellon Arena. The city-wide event featured 10 acts, garnered major media attention, and raised $185,000 for the American Red Cross.

The Creative and Performing Arts High School student went on to perform the title role in AIDA during her senior year, and appeared in commercials for GNC, Dad’s Dog Food, and the Black Family Channel.

Margot continued her training through the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Civic Light Opera, studied with vocal coach Claudia Benack, at Carnegie Mellon University, and completed Dance/Musical Theatre classes in the nationally-ranked dance program at Point Park University.

Margot B Cool

While sharing the stage with Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Nelly Furtado, and Lupe Fiasco, Margot released Inspired  an EP featuring covers of songs by five African-American artists who truly inspired her to live her own dream.

Margot also performed the National Anthem for countless national sporting events and charity fundraisers, and lent her talents to many regional entertainment acts. Her relentless desire to give back found her touring with Armed Forces Entertainment, performing for troops stationed in Cuba.

2009 kicked off with Margot being named Best Female Vocalist at the Pittsburgh Hip Hop Awards, and hitting the recording studio to finish her second full-length CD Two Thousand Mine.

“Symptoms of Love” by Margot B. @ S.O.B.’s

The summer release coincided with her joining Jason Mraz on select tour dates. Margot performed the duet Lucky with Jason in venues such as Nikon at Jones Beach in New York, Minneapolis’ Xcel Energy Center (on her 21st birthday), and in her hometown.

The 22-year old  wrapped up filming of a video for the Oxygen TV Network, where she was a Featured Artist of the Month, which was showcased in a national Hoover Vacuum commercial currently airing, will be releasing Live at The Hazlett – recorded before an intimate studio audience in August 2010, and has started work on a European roll-out of her popinspired music.

Based out of New York City, Margot continues to write, take meetings with major labels, audition for roles, and wait for her moment. It wasn’t the shelved Janet Jackson-backed “triple-threatMTV reality show project, for which she beat out thousands of others for one of 10 spots.

A nine-time call back finalist for Broadway’s ‘Spring Awakening‘, she knows her big break could be right around the corner…it’s just a matter of keeping at it, staying focused, and working hard. Nobody does that better than Margot B!

Margot B. – Complete

Also look for Margot in the upcoming feature films “Love and Other Drugs” (Jake Gyllenhaal/Anne Hathaway) and Fugly (John Leguziamo/Rosie Perez); the made-for-TV movie “My Destiny“, a two-part film/documentary showcasing both her acting and singing; and in what popular blog welovesoaps.com calls a highly anticipated entry into the growing world of web series and indie soaps, In Between Men.

As we speak Margot B. is part of the current RENT cast, it is set in NYC’s East Village, is a modern take on the classic Puccini opera, La Boheme.

It tells the unforgettable story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today.

Wildcookie

Fredrik Lager aka Freddie Cruger & Red Astaire first got in contact with hip-hop when he started out as a break dancer in the early 80′s. His electric boogie dancing brother was collecting records at that time, which introduced Freddie to the world of black dance music.

Around 85-86 he worked weekends at a legendary import record store in Stockholm called Space (special job cleaning the toilet). At this time he started buying more and more records, mostly electro and rap records but also disco and funk 12″/7″ classics.

One thing led to another and he soon bought his first drum machine and turntables in 88 (according to himself the best investment he’s ever done). Around 91 he met up with Mad Mats (Raw Fusion/Jugglin’) and started to hang out in Mats studio in downtown Stockholm.

Wildcookie – Serious Drug – Live @ Kungsträdgården, Stockholm

This started a friendship and working relationship, which is still going strong today. Around 92 he bought his first sampler and released his first 12″ vinyl in 94 under the name Chimney Heads (only 100 copies printed). But since then he’s worked with numerous artists like China Moses (DeDe Bridgewaters daughter), Bob Powers (Tribe Called Quest, The Roots), Rappadon, Baz Baz, La Nata (France), ADL, Desmond Foster, Linn, Swing Fly, Anthony David, Bas-1 and many more.

The characteristic style off Freddies productions are a blend off old school hip-hop and b-boy grooves mixed up with dirty funk, soul, reggae, latin and disco rhythms.

He’s currently signed to Jugglin’ Records (sub-label to Raw Fusion Recordings) but he also releases music on Swedish Brandy, GAMM (as the notorious Red Astaire) and his own Home Grown label.

Since his last release on Tru Thoughts in 2006 has been busy traveling the world as a DJ everything from future to old-school funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, disco and latin, and releasing music – one of these releases was the debut, and now extremely rare, Wildcookie 12”.

The “Drugs EP” received support from Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 1 and the lead track, “Heroine”, also features on the debut album ‘Cookie Dough’, due out on Tru Thoughts on 21st February.

Heroine

Wildcookie is not a one man band though; each one of Freddie’s ultra-crisp productions and sophisticated synthline melodies are backed with the pitch perfect, often freestyled, vocals of Anthony Mills.

Anthony Mills is no stranger to the world of music. In 12 short years he has toured extensively with Harry Belafonte’s All-Star Band, recorded with Krs-One, Amy Winehouse, Leela James, Maxi Priest, Snow, Sizzla, Dead Prez, Doc (Esthero), Sly Dunbar, Chinna Smith and Grace Bumbry.

Mills has written over 1000 songs in this time and recorded well over 100 studio and live albums, providing lead vocals for two other duos – Super Viral Brothers (Pope/Universal) and XXLARGEMILLS.

Touchy Touchy

The debut single, “Heroine”, is out as a free download from wildcookie.bandcamp.com, the follow up singles ‘Touchy Touchy’ and ‘Serious Drug’ from the latest Album ‘Cookie Dough’ are all available now.
